2016 is the 1,500 anniversary of St Cadfan building his monastery on Bardsey Island.  It has been a very important place of pilgrimage for 1,500 years and it is said that over 20,000 saints are buried there.  Three pilgrimages to Bardsey equals one to Rome.

To celebrate the occasion the Cylch Catholig is arranging two days of celebration on the 18th and 20th June 2016.  They will be ecumenical and bilingual (Welsh & English) and led by Canon Andrew Jones, Archdeacon of Meirionnydd from the Church in Wales, an authority on Sant Cadfan and Bardsey and Fr Allan R Jones.

Saturday 18th June will begin at 10.30am at Felin Uchaf, Rhoshirwaun in one of the round houses, giving a true feeling of the 7th century.  The pilgrimage will begin with morning prayer led by Fr Allan and followed by a talk on St Cadfan and his founding of the monastery on Bardsey by Canon Andrew.  Afterwards there will be an opportunity to explore the Felin Uchaf Centre (felinuchaf.org) and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

We will proceed to Aberdaron for lunch at the Tŷ Newydd overlooking the sea and Bardsey Island.  This must be booked beforehand.

The climax of the pilgrimage will be celebrating the first Mass of Sunday at St Hywyn’s, Aberdaron at 3pm.  This is where the pilgrims down the ages congregated overnight before taking the boat over to Bardsey.  It will be a sung mass celebrated by Fr Allan, using Latin, English and Welsh.  There will be a small choir of male voices and a celtic harp at the celebration.  This will be only the second Catholic Mass to be celebrated in this ancient church since the Reformation.

On Monday, 20th June a boat trip is being arranged to travel over to Bardsey (weather permitting) and Mass will be celebrated in the ruins of the old Abbey.  The cost of the boat is £30 for adults and £20 for children.  It will be a chance to explore the holy island and enjoy a relaxing day.  A packed lunch will be needed
